The Cathedral of Cusco is one of America’s most magnificent and historic landmarks, with its construction taking place beneath the Inca Royal Palace’s foundations.
The Spanish conquistadors razed the palace and erected the church over a 50-year span after invading Cusco.
This temple was the most important and sacred place during the Inca Empire since it was built in honor of the supreme god, the sun (Inti). This temple, according to chroniclers and historians, was full of gold sculptures and other statues.
When the Spanish arrived, they kidnapped the Inca monarch, Atahualpa, who offered a room full of gold for his release. For this, the gold was melted down as payment but, in the purest colonial style, they assassinated him after collecting the money.
The Sacsayhuaman Fortress is an Inca archaeological site with some of the world’s most remarkable buildings, leaving riddles concerning the size of its boulders and the accuracy with which they were joined.
This is a must-see attraction in Cusco. This spectacular stone-based fortification is situated on a hill that overlooks Cusco’s main square. This is one of the areas where the Inca engineering advances can be seen, where the absence of mortars and human forces did not prevent the connecting of stones weighing over a ton.
Respect to the precision of connecting of the edges is perfect, such is the fact that you can’t even slide a sheet of paper between them. However, it remains a mystery how the Incas transported these heavy stones here.
Tambomachay functioned as a spa for the Incas’ political elite, thanks to its incredible underground hydraulic system building by the Incas. Natural spring water still runs nowadays through the canals from the surrounding hot springs.
Its name derives from the Quechua language, which means “strong red.” It got its name from the hue of the rock, which turns reddish after sunset.
